Update on Whiting 100’s or a Full Whiting Saddle for Midge Sizes?

This is a follow up to my blog on Whiting 100’s or a Full Whiting Saddle for Midge Sizes?

John Bush sent me an email and said that we should not forget that if we did not want to spend the money for a full saddle for midge sizes, you can get ¼ saddles, and ½ saddles.   So I thought I would look at the ¼ saddle I purchased.

It still had 75 12-inch feathers and I used maybe 10.  I paid $42.00 for the ¼ saddle with 85 feathers 12-inches or longer.  Per Whiting, an 8-inch feather that is size 14 will hackle four (4) flies. Two Whiting 100 packs would give you 200 flies at a cost of $40.00.  My ¼ saddle will give you (85 feathers x 6 flies per feather) 510 flies, 2.5 times more for just $2.00.

I talked to Ty at the Plateau Fly Shop.  Ty said that he would special order ¼ and ½ saddles.  Just let him know what you are looking for and talk to him.  For you guys that are out of the area, talk to your local fly shop and I am sure that they will do the same.
