Hook: #14 – 20 scud or nymph
Thread: black or to match body
Tail: dark, salmon, or olive hackle fibers
Body: light, tan, or olive dubbing
Under hackle / legs: soft hackle to match / complement tail
Over hackle: soft hackle to match / complement tail

Match the colors to the freshwater shrimp or scud in the waters you fish
Tie on a hook size and shape to match the waters you fish
Tie in the tail hook shank length

   

   

Dub a tapered body; be sure not to crowd the eye

   

Invert the hook and tie in the legs behind the eye shorter than hook gape; tie off and clip stem

   

   

Invert (revert?) the hook and tie in hackle fibers on top of the shank above the legs; clip butts and clip fibers at a slant back toward the beginning of the body

   

   

Thread wrap head; whip finish; head cement
