from Ed Story’s Missouri Trout Flys How to Tye and Fish Them
This is a variant to the Bluewinged Olive Emerger. Ed Story’s instructions are to tie the front hackle in over the top of the wing on the top side of the shank. However, in the recipe, he says to tie the front hackle under the shank. The difference is that by the instructions, the hackle will be on top of the fly and by the recipe, the hackle will be along side or under the fly body.
To V notch a feather, cut out the tip and separate out the desired number of fibers at the V cut. Pull the separated fibers toward what was the tip and the rest of the fibers towards the butt.
Materials:
Hook: #16, 18 (scud, nymph, wet)
Thread: brown
Body: light olive dubbing
Wing: 8 dark blue dun hackle fibers
Hackle: 8 brown partridge hackle fibers
Head: thread
Instructions:
Lay down the thread base
Dub the body, it may taper
V notch a dark blue dun hackle feather and separate out four fibers on each side of the center stem (quill); tie in the 8 fibers on the top of the shank just behind the eye with two loose wraps; pull from the butt end until the tips of the fibers are the length of the body; tight wrap and clip off the extra butt end
V notch a brown partridge feather and separate out four fibers on each side of the quill; invert the hook; lay the notched feather on the hook (it will be the bottom since the hook is inverted) with four fibers on each side of the body; use two loose wraps to attach the feather right behind the eye; pull from the feather butt end until the fibers are to the hook bend or a tiny bit longer; tight wrap the hackle and clip off the extra butt end
Thread wrap the head; whip finish; head cement
