When it comes to Terrestrials, it is important that you have a number of these ant flies in you fly box.  Terrestrials are all around us, in the fields and by the stream.  They are loved by the fish when they drop into the water.  Trout will stop their normal feed to eat one of these juicy insects.

The Foam Ant with Hackle legs is a great fly to use during the summer and early fall.

Material:

  • Hook: Tiemco TMC200R or TMC101
  • Hook sizes: 12, 14, 16
  • Body: Layers of Black foam sheets, topped with a white foam sheet, laminated together using 3M77 Spray Adhesive.  When dried, the bodies are formed by using a hollow punch – sizes 3/16, 1/4
  • Thread: UNI-Thread Black 8/0
  • Legs: Black hackle feather (trim top and bottom leaving only the side hackle barbs)

The black and white foam sheets can be purchased at any hoppy store or Walmart.  I laminate 10 black foam sheets and one white foam sheet.  I have a picture of the punched body below next to a foam bee body.  You can purchase Hi-Vis Soft Foam Ant Bodies by Wapsi.  The hollow punch set was purchased at Harbor Freight for less than  $10.00.

Fish this fly on a dead drift.
