Guides' Choice Hare's Ear Nymph Guides' Choice Hare's Ear Nymph

At the MTFA meeting in Branson last night, Matthew Peet was telling me about the Guides Choice Hare’s Ear Nymph.  Matt caught over 50 trout at one location at Bennett Springs and also had success with it at Crane Creek.  It is his favorite in the Black Hills.  Matt had tied a number of flies for the drawing that night, but by the time I got a chance to get one of his the flies, Howard had already taken the Guide’s Choice Hare’s Ear nymph.  I asked Howard if I could see that fly and never gave it back to him.  Matt and Howard fish together all the time, so I asked Matt to tie him some extras.  Talk to Matt next time you see him, and try to get some of his flies.  He is a great tier.  Matt tied his fly on a TMC100 size 14 and I used a TMC200 size 14.   I did not move the lead up behind the bead, but left some space for all the tying that is required.

Fishing Instructions – It doesn’t matter! Straight up stream with or without a strike indicator, down and across with or with out an indicator and be sure to let it hang in the current and depending on the speed of the current retrieved up stream.  Traditionally this would be fished down and across, this would be the preferred method.
